Read on to learn more about how lavender oil can help take the itch out of mosquito bites.

How do the scientific properties of lavender essential oil stop the itch sensation from bug bites?

Lavender oil contains compounds that have been shown to stop the itch and inflammation associated with bug bites.

Lavender oil contains two compounds, linalool and linalyl acetate, which have been shown in a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry to stop the itch and inflammation associated with bug bites. These compounds are thought to work by blocking histamine receptors, which are involved in the itching and inflammation responses.

Any 100% pure lavender essential oil will do, there is no need to spend more on pricier brands.  This brand is excellent and reasonably priced, and it is a large 4 ounce size:

How to Use Lavender Oil for Mosquito Bites

There are a few different ways you can use lavender oil to soothe mosquito bites. One way is to add a few drops of lavender oil to a cotton ball or Q-tip and apply it directly to the bite. Another way is to add 10-15 drops of lavender oil to a warm bath and soak in it for 15-20 minutes. You can also add 1-2 drops of lavender oil to your moisturizer or lotion and apply it to your skin after being outdoors.

If you’re using lavender oil on small children or infants, be sure to diluted it with a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil or jojoba oil. To do this, add 1 drop of lavender oil per 1 teaspoon of carrier oil. Apply the mixture to the affected area using a cotton ball or Q-tip.

When using any essential oil, it’s important to do a patch test first to make sure you’re not allergic. To do a patch test, apply a small amount of the diluted essential oil mixture to the inside of your elbow and wait 24 hours. If you experience any redness, itching, or swelling, discontinue use and consult with your doctor.

Concluding Thoughts

Lavender oil is a safe and effective way to soothe itchy mosquito bites. Be sure to follow the instructions above and do a patch test before using it on your skin.

Lavender is also an effective bug repellent, so it is a good consideration to replace more toxic versions of bug spray with natural essential oils.   There are many other oils that repel bugs, too, like citronella, tea tree and peppermint.
