A Review of Truvani Protein Powder and Details About That Lead Warning on the Package

Over the years, Truvani protein powder has garnered a decent amount of attention and positive reviews on Amazon.

It has also experienced critical reviews, with the always expected smaller percentage who were not happy with the product or experience.

Use the free Protein Powder Ingredient Decoder below to find out which of 4 risk patterns matters most for the protein powder you are using now. Tap the statements that are true about your current powder, and the tool returns your dominant risk (heavy metals, allergen reaction, hidden sweetener, or additive overload) plus the specific cleanup priority. Truvani specifically scores well on additives but did have a Prop 65 lead warning, which is why heavy metal risk is the most-asked question about this brand.

Truvani products have been around for several years, and they are touted for being organic, high quality, and having only whole foods listed in the ingredients.

I decided to try the vanilla protein powder for myself and write an assessment about it.

Truvani Vanilla Protein Powder

This vanilla protein powder is made from five whole food, all-natural ingredients. It is free of artificial sweeteners and flavors. It’s also GMO-free and loaded with vitamins and minerals. What I like most is the short list of ingredients, with no fillers, preservatives or items that could not be pronounced. Here are the five ingredients in Truvani’s vanilla protein powder:

  • Organic pea protein concentrate
  • Organic vanilla powder
  • Organic pumpkin seed concentrate
  • Organic monk fruit extract
  • Organic chia seed protein concentrate

My Assessment Of Vanilla Truvani Protein Powder

I’ve tried other protein powders that leave a lot to be desired in the taste category, but this one actually tasted pretty good.

It was not too chalky, and I found that it mixed well with milk or water if you use a good blender. If you only add liquid and no additional fruit, you need to drink it quickly or it will settle.

Through many years of preparing protein and green shakes, I’ve found a key tip. Add a banana, at the very least, so the protein powder doesn’t settle at the bottom of the glass too quickly. This keeps the powder suspended and mixed longer.

Settling will tend to happen with most protein powders if you simply mix them with milk or water, as there is nothing for the powder to grab onto.

A lot of the protein is derived from whole foods with fiber. So a portion won’t dissolve completely, and that’s normal. Fiber doesn’t dissolve completely.

If you are slow to drink your shake, stir or shake it as you get closer to the bottom. If you have had protein powders that don’t leave a bit of a trace at the bottom, then they are likely not made of whole foods.

“Last, was sweeter than I normally like.”

To me, it seems like the creators of these types of products feel the need to cater to the average person’s sugar addictions.

Those who are not used to eating so much sugar in their daily food and drink may find it a little on the sweet side.

Examining Points Made From Others’ Reviews and Comments on Truvani Protein Powder

I didn’t want to stop with my opinion on Truvani protein powders. I read hundreds of reviews on Truvani Protein Powder to get a well-rounded synopsis of what others think of the product. Many of the reviews say the same things in different words.

There were thousands of positive reviews that touched on the following topics:

  • They liked the simple, whole food ingredients.
  • They liked the taste.
  • They liked the mixability.
  • They were attracted by the good reputation of the company.

The negative reviews were few and far between, as the product has 4.5 stars and tens of thousands of reviews. The unhappy customers focused on:

  • Taste is too sweet
  • Didn’t like the taste at all
  • Powder not mixing well enough
  • Product does not stay mixed
  • The texture not being right
  • The Prop 65 lead warning that is on the packaging

A Lead Warning on Truvani Protein Powder?

If protein powder lead concerns prompted you to read this far, the next logical step is binding what may already be in your system. Activated charcoal in the gut binds residual heavy metals so they exit through the bowel instead of accumulating. Take it on an empty stomach, two hours from food and supplements, including your protein powder.

On the surface, a lead warning from Prop 65 on your food is certainly concerning. Let’s dive a little bit deeper into this lead warning on the packaging, as I have seen it on other health food products as well here in California.

Two Clean Alternatives That Pass The Decoder Tool

If the Decoder Tool above flagged the protein you are using now, here are two alternatives that pass all four risk categories (heavy metals, allergens, sweeteners, additives). Both were verified live on Amazon today.

Why this passes the Decoder Tool: For anyone who wants to sidestep the heavy metal question entirely, the cleanest move is a beef isolate. Beef does not bioaccumulate metals the way plant proteins do, so this is the belt-and-suspenders option for the worry that drove you to the Prop 65 warning page in the first place.

Why this passes the Decoder Tool: If you cannot do dairy and want the absolute shortest ingredient list on the market, egg white is the play. Drink Wholesome uses 3 to 5 whole-food ingredients per flavor, no gums, no carrageenan, no artificial sweeteners, no “natural flavors” hiding chemistry. It is the minimalist label answer for sensitive stomachs.

WARNING: Consuming this product can expose you to lead, which is known to the state of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.p65Warnings.ca.gov/food

A Prop 65 label is one that must be printed on the packaging of a food in California if it contains trace amounts of lead.

Here is what the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) says when asked about what Prop 65 requires:

“Proposition 65 requires businesses to provide warnings to Californians about significant exposures to chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. These chemicals can be in the products that Californians purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment.”

What is not mentioned in Prop 65

All soil has trace amounts of lead.  Everything that grows in soil or eats food grown in soil will have trace amounts of lead in it. Truvani protein powder’s ingredients are grown in soil, so they will have trace amounts of lead in them.

We searched for the most commonly asked questions regarding the Prop 65 lead warning label on natural foods, and decided to answer them here to get a clearer picture.

Why does Truvani protein have a lead warning?

Lead is a naturally occurring element present in soil due to pollution, and it is virtually impossible to eliminate it from any food that grows in soil. The ingredients in Truvani protein powder are whole foods, grown in the ground; nothing is produced in a lab. For this reason, there will be traces of lead in its products.

Is Truvani protein powder third-party tested?

Yes, Truvani protein powders are first tested in-house, and then sent out to a third party to test again.

Does all soil contain lead?

Lead occurs in all soils and is usually found in the range of 10–45 parts per million. In areas of greater pollution, the lead content will be in the higher range. It is the most common urban soil contaminant, especially if the farmland runs alongside a highway.

Should I worry about lead in soil?

Our diets have no requirements for lead.

Research has shown that at the levels of 10-50 ppm, there are no detrimental health effects that have been recorded.

Our bodies have the ability to remove heavy metals with proper detox methods and with the consumption of plants like cilantro, sea vegetables, and chlorophyll.

More information about detoxing with natural green plants like the ones mentioned above can be found in these articles:

Why does my supplement have a lead warning?

Your body uses glutathione to neutralize and chelate heavy metals. The more lead, mercury, or aluminum your body is processing, the faster glutathione gets depleted. Replacing it directly is foundational if you have been concerned about any form of exposure, whether from food, water, or environment.

The body uses glutathione to neutralize and excrete heavy metals. If you have been concerned about exposure from any source, this is the foundational supplement.

These warnings are required by the State of California and are part of Proposition 65. Its purpose is to help those who live in California make informed decisions about the products they purchase.
