Why Is My Skin So Dry Even When I Moisturize? Magical Insects to the Rescue!

Why Is My Skin So Dry Even When I Moisturize? Magical Insects to the Rescue! TheWellthieone

Many of us feel frustrated because no matter how much we moisturize, it seems like our skin is not responding by becoming soft and supple enough.

Scratch a nail on the skin’s surface a couple of hours later after moisturizing, and it can leave a whitish line of dead skin cells. This appears to be because the skin is neglected, except that it isn’t!

Hard-earned money is spent on good products, and time is taken to apply them, so what more does your skin want as it holds that soft and supple skin that you desire hostage under a dry desert exterior?

Why is my skin so dry even when I moisturize? 8 Reasons and 1 solution!

There are a few things that might be causing your skin to become so dry, and you need to address each of them in order to get your skin back on track.

  1. Drying ingredients in some moisturizers

Lingering skin dryness may be because the moisturizer being used has some sneaky ingredients in it that are dehydrating, like different sulfates or isopropyl alcohol. Better ingredients to focus on for very dry skin are items like hyaluronic acid, shea butter, or glycerin.

  1. Use of hand sanitizers and wipes

Dry skin is difficult to eliminate if you frequently use hand sanitizers and wipes. These are designed to kill bacteria and remove dirt. In the process, they also strip the protective layer of skin that is there to keep the skin moist and healthy. We do not recommend using these types of products on a regular basis; they are really more harmful than good.

  1. Infrequent exfoliation

The reason why skin is so dry even after moisturizing can be because the exfoliation step is not being used enough. Exfoliation helps remove the dead, dry skin cells, revealing the soft new skin underneath. Moisturizing agents can only penetrate so far. Removing a layer or two that is dead and does not need to be moisturized will increase the performance of the moisturizing step.

  1. The diet is high in sugar and processed foods.

Highly processed, sugary, and deep-fried foods can contribute to unhealthy and dry skin. Eating healthily, like ensuring plenty of fruits and vegetables are in your diet, will help you rule this important factor out as a cause of dry skin.

  1. Not enough water consumption

Dehydration is something that many of us are suffering from, and we don’t even know it. Drink before you are thirsty, on a regular interval. Once you are thirsty, chances are you are already dehydrated.

  1. Showering in the Colder Months

It’s normal for skin to become drier in colder climates during the fall and winter, as heating systems often dry out our skin. To avoid making dry skin worse, when showering:

  • Keep the door closed.
  • Use warm water rather than hot in the shower.
  • Limit shower time to 5 minutes if you can, or make it shorter than usual.
  • Be gentle when you dry off. Blot your skin with your towel.
  • Use as little cleanser as you can, just enough to remove the day’s grime but not so much that it produces a thick lather.
  • Apply moisturizer immediately after blotting your skin, while it is still damp.
  1. Medications

Starting new medications or undergoing medical procedures can spur dry skin. Common medications that cause dry skin are:

  • Topical steroids
  • Diuretics
  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Birth control

8. Using Ointments vs. Lotions

Using an ointment, especially in colder months, will be more effective at giving your skin an extra layer of protection and moisture. Look for ointments that have natural oils in them, like

  • Shea butter
  • Coconut oil
  • Jojoba oil
  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Manuka honey, propolis, and beeswax
