Bentonite Vs Baking Soda Abrasivity

The most common pushback on natural toothpaste is “but baking soda is abrasive.” That is true for baking soda. It is NOT true for bentonite.

Relative Dentin Abrasivity (RDA) scores published by the ADA:

RDA 0 to 70: low abrasivity (safe for daily use). Bentonite clay sits around RDA 8. Plain water rinse is RDA 4. Most hydroxyapatite-based natural toothpastes are RDA 30 to 50.

RDA 70 to 100: medium. Most standard fluoride toothpastes (Colgate Total, Crest Cavity Protection) sit around RDA 70.

RDA 100 to 150: high. Baking soda alone is RDA 7 to 30 surprisingly low, but most baking-soda-plus-peroxide whitening toothpastes hit RDA 120 to 150.
